The City Beneath the City

The oldest tunnels were dug upward by people fleeing the world below.

What the party believes

A wall collapses during renovations at a cave hotel, revealing a stair beneath the known underground city. The owner hires the characters to inspect it before the authorities close the property. Their guide, Derin, grew up nearby but seems to know rooms no modern survey has reached.

The new stair is worn on the underside, as if generations climbed it from below. Warm air carries cooking smoke. Rolling stone doors close behind the party one by one, and Derin quietly removes his shoes to feel vibrations through the floor.

Map the new passage, find the people living below, and reopen the route to the surface.

Where the trail leads

  1. Descend through shafts whose footholds face upward toward the surface.
  2. Find an inhabited district where murals describe daylight as a promised afterlife.
  3. Learn that Derin has been carrying medicine and messages to the people below.
  4. Reach a geothermal engine that keeps the lower city habitable but is beginning to fail.
  5. Face the city's guardian as it seals the surface route to keep both populations from competing for air.

What actually happened

The earliest underground builders came from a much larger world below. Cappadocia's tunnels were their route upward, not a refuge dug from the surface. Derin is one of their descendants and opened the hotel passage because the lower climate engine is dying.

Thousands are preparing to ascend. The guardian will kill the party to protect the limited air and water above. Solving the problem means opening the surface, repairing the engine, or deciding which population the system should sustain.

Where it can end

  1. Open the route and negotiate a place for the lower city on the surface.
  2. Repair the engine and turn the tunnels into a bridge between both worlds.
  3. Seal one city away, accepting who will be trapped on the other side.

The history behind the story

Cappadocia contains rock cut dwellings, churches, villages, and subterranean towns including Kaymakli and Derinkuyu. Some underground communities served as refuges during periods of conflict. The lower civilization and climate engine are original fantasy, not claims about the real sites' builders.
