The Unanswered Questions
An ancient court left its prophecies blank, and the present must supply the answers.
What the party believes
The characters are invited to inspect a cache of oracle bones before the inscriptions are announced. Every piece contains a question from the Shang court, yet none contains an answer. A military historian named Hao translates the first line, and soldiers in ancient armor appear outside the excavation waiting for orders.
More questions wake as the bones are cleaned. Crops refuse to grow until someone predicts the harvest. A voice from the royal tomb asks whether the king should invade. Hao knows the missing answers and begs the party never to speak them.
Stop the unanswered questions from controlling the present and learn why the original diviners buried them.
Where the trail leads
- Translate a cracked bone while each possible reading changes the weather above the dig.
- Dismiss an ancient army without answering the question that summoned it.
- Follow Hao into the tomb of Fu Hao and find her name removed from a second royal record.
- Protect the bones from officials who want a guaranteed answer to a modern crisis.
- Confront the spirit of King Wu Ding when he demands that Hao resume her place at his side.
What actually happened
Hao is Fu Hao, the queen, general, and ritual figure whose burial survived intact. In this story she discovered that written answers forced the world to obey the court. She left the final bones unanswered and hid them so uncertainty could return to ordinary life.
Wu Ding's spirit wants the archive restored. A single spoken answer will give him authority over the question it settles. Fu Hao brought the party because modern voices can refuse a king in ways his court could not.
Where it can end
- Defeat Wu Ding and rebury the unanswered bones with Fu Hao's story restored.
- Destroy the archive so no ruler can use it again.
- Create a public ritual where no answer has power without consent from everyone it affects.
The history behind the story
Late Shang diviners recorded questions on animal bones and turtle plastrons. Surviving inscriptions concern hunting, crops, warfare, childbirth, sacrifice, and ancestors. The magical unanswered archive and erased queen are fictional changes made for the adventure.
